Geometry II: Solids, Triangles, and Tessellations

In the first part of this course participants continue their explorations in geometry and measurement. They solve problems involving surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes, special right triangles, and measures of angles formed by chords, tangents and secants. Participants use instructional materials to build three-dimensional shapes, develop the formulas for volume, and reconstruct circular plates in archeology.

In the second part of the course, participants define the basic trigonometric ratios and use them to solve problems. Participants examine the use of radian angular measurements. Teachers explore trigonometric functions and their graphs and solve problems involving angles of elevation and depression. They also investigate the unit circle, the laws of sine and cosine, and develop, prove and use some basis trigonometric identities.
