Secondary School Redesign

High schools face many competing demands as they work to redesign their schools to improve student learning, to meet with success on various state initiatives and assessments, and to prepare young people for the global economy and the high tech world they will enter. This transformation will only happen if schools embrace best practices in their overall operations to promote and continually monitor systemic change. A lack of personalized and rigorous curricula needs to be addressed to support students, especially those who are falling through the cracks – academically, emotionally, and socially.

Teachers21's goal is to improve the quality of educational experiences available to high school students to ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to live productive and meaningful lives after graduation.

As with all of our initiatives, we customize our work for individual districts. Working from a comprehensive framework outlining our secondary school redesign model, Teachers21 will collaborate with districts to create an action plan for reform in their high schools.

Our Secondary School Redesign Model starts with a comprehensive assessment to identify strengths and challenges and specify priorities for improving student learning, meeting challenging academic standards, and creating a blueprint for the future. We build change utilizing a unique, research based, multi-faceted approach to reform rooted in small learning communities.

Teachers21 consultants work with the school community in establishing shared governance to embed a clear mission and vision into all redesign work. Professional learning communities are formed to utilize collective inquiry in refining and reflecting on how schools improve the learning of all. Curriculum, instruction, and assessment are made more relevant through research-based, technology-enhanced and differentiated practices. Equity of opportunity and access is secured through inclusive attitudes and behaviors that assure a safe and supportive environment for all. The use of time and resources are allocated so that teacher collaboration and the diverse needs of students can be better addressed. Community partnerships are established to promote an atmosphere of shared responsibility. Throughout all of the work, personalization is incorporated to support the social, emotional and academic needs of today’s adolescents as they develop the voices and competencies to be tomorrow’s leaders.

Teachers21 consultants customize workshops, institutes, courses, and job-embedded instructional or leadership work to bring these approaches to life in each district. They provide educators with the knowledge, skills and support to institutionalize a process for continual improvement that promotes relevant, rigorous, and equitable opportunities for all.
